1. Duomo di Milano

It is impossible to visit Milan without admiring its symbol par excellence: the imposing Duomo! The construction of this magnificent Gothic-style cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria Nascente, began in 1386 on the initiative of Gian Galeazzo Visconti. With its almost ethereal appearance, it is the perfect blend of Lombard and Nordic architecture and houses about 3,500 statues inside, including secular figures such as Dante Alighieri and boxer Primo Carnera. Interestingly, the facade even features a miniature version of New York's Statue of Liberty. Inside, the relic of the Holy Nail, located in the main apse, deserves special mention. There are no fewer than 135 spires, and on the highest, at 108.5 meters, stands the famous Madonnina, a gilded copper statue about 4 meters tall.
Not far from the Duomo, on Corso Europa, there is also the Milanese Walk of Fame, an avenue that celebrates the footprints of celebrities from Italian music, film, and culture.

2. Palazzo Reale

One of the finest examples of neoclassical architecture in Milan, the Palazzo Reale has a history rooted in the 12th century, when it served as the seat of the municipal administration. During the rule of the Torriani, Visconti and Sforza families, it became an important political center. Later, under Spanish rule, it became the residence of Governor Ferrante Gonzaga, later enriching itself with the famous Sala delle Cariatidi under Governor Antonio de Guzmán. Its beauty was further enhanced during Napoleon's reign, with frescoes and decorations by artists such as Hayez and Appiani.
Today the Royal Palace is the exhibition hub of the city and hosts prestigious temporary and permanent exhibitions. Before visiting, it is always recommended to check the official website to find out what exhibitions will be featured during your stay.

3. Museo del Novecento

Next to the Duomo is a building of great cultural interest: the Museo del Novecento. Located inside the Palazzo dell'Arengario, it houses a collection of about 4,000 representative works of art from the 20th century. Among the best-known masterpieces are the famous Fourth State by Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo, the Composition By Vasily Kandinsky, Béatrice Hastings by Amedeo Modigliani and Ms. Virginia by Boccioni.
The museum has several floors, each dedicated to a specific artistic period: the first houses works from the Jucker collection and Futurism, the second brings together works by classicist and abstractionist artists, the third focuses on conceptual art, and the tour concludes with arte povera.

4. Pinacoteca Ambrosiana

If you are in Milan, you cannot miss a visit to the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, a museum that collects authentic masterpieces of art. Among the most famous works are Our Lady of the Pavilion Botticelli's, Fruit soup Caravaggio's, Portrait of a musician by Leonardo da Vinci and Adoration of the Magi Titian's.
Its history began in 1607, when it was founded by Cardinal Federico Borromeo. Beginning in 1618, the museum was enriched by the donation of the Cardinal's personal collection, which included paintings, statues and drawings of immense value.
Today the Pinacoteca consists of 24 rooms and holds a vast artistic heritage, with works from the Renaissance, 17th-century Lombardy, the 18th century, and important artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

5. Navigli

The Navigli represent one of the most picturesque and authentic areas of Milan. The best known is the Naviglio Grande, a perfect place for a romantic stroll and a favorite spot for tourists to take postcard photos. This network of canals, designed by Leonardo da Vinci, has played a key role in Milanese commerce since the 16th century. Over time, the Navigli system extended beyond the boundaries of the metropolitan city.
Today, in addition to being one of Milan's most characteristic aperitivo spots, the area is home to important cultural institutions such as the Casa delle Arti - Spazio Alda Merini, the Armani Silos and MUDEC.

6. Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio

This extraordinary basilica, one of the symbols of Lombard Romanesque architecture, is the second most important church in Milan after the Duomo. Consecrated in 387 in honor of St. Ambrose, it has retained its original charm despite the damage suffered during World War II.
What makes it unique compared to other Romanesque churches is the presence of two brick towers of different heights and a large atrium that preserves ancient archaeological artifacts. Inside, it holds the relics of St. Ambrose, St. Gervasius and St. Protasius in the crypt. Also of special note is the Sarcophagus of Stilicho, dating from the 14th century, decorated with bas-reliefs depicting religious scenes.
Another peculiarity is the chapel located at the end of the south aisle, dedicated to St. Victor, added only later to the original construction.

8. Sforzesco Castle

One of the historical symbols of Milan, the Castello Sforzesco is a majestic fortress built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan. In the past it was one of the largest citadels in Europe, while today it houses several museums, including the Museum of Ancient Art, the Picture Gallery, the Museum of Musical Instruments, and the Egyptian Museum.
Inside is the famous Sala delle Asse, frescoed by Leonardo da Vinci, and the Pietà Rondanini, Michelangelo's last unfinished work. The castle is surrounded by the vast Sempione Park, a green oasis ideal for relaxing after a day of sightseeing.

9. Parco Sempione

Located behind Castello Sforzesco, Sempione Park is the green lung of downtown Milan. Designed in the late 19th century, it is a perfect place for walking, jogging or simply relaxing in the shade of the trees.

The Civic Arena, a neoclassical amphitheater used for sporting events and concerts.

The Milan Triennale, one of the most important museums of design and architecture.

10. Arco della Pace

The Arch of Peace is one of the most impressive monuments in Milan. Built in 1807 at the behest of Napoleon, it is decorated with reliefs celebrating important historical events. From its top you can admire one of the best views of Corso Sempione, one of the city's most elegant streets.
At night, the area becomes a hub for Milanese nightlife, with numerous trendy bars and restaurants.

11. Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Cenacolo Vinciano

The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie is one of Milan's architectural treasures and home to one of the world's most famous masterpieces, "The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci. This fresco, painted between 1495 and 1498, depicts the moment when Jesus announces the betrayal of one of the apostles.
Because of its fragility, the visit is governed by strict reservations, so it is essential to purchase tickets well in advance.

12. Church of St. Maurice at the Major Monastery

📍 Metro MM1 stop Cordusio or Cairoli

Often called the "Sistine Chapel of Milan," this church is a true Renaissance jewel. The interior is completely frescoed by Bernardino Luini and his pupils, creating a spectacular effect. Once part of a Benedictine women's monastery, today it is one of the most fascinating churches in the city.

14. Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery

This 19th-century gallery, considered the "drawing room of Milan," connects Piazza Duomo to Piazza della Scala. It houses high-fashion stores, historic restaurants and the famous mosaic of the bull, on which, according to tradition, you have to rotate three times for good luck!

15. Teatro alla Scala

One of the most famous opera houses in the world, La Scala has hosted some of the greatest performances in history, with artists such as Verdi, Puccini and Maria Callas. Even if you do not attend a performance, you can visit the attached museum.

16. Brera and the Pinacoteca di Brera

Brera is the artistic district par excellence, with cobblestone streets and a bohemian atmosphere. The heart of the district is the Pinacoteca di Brera, which houses works by Raphael, Caravaggio, Hayez and many others.

CityLife is Milan's most modern neighborhood, with futuristic skyscrapers designed by architects such as Zaha Hadid and Daniel Libeskind. In addition to spectacular buildings, it houses a large shopping mall and a public park.

A temple of Italian soccer, the San Siro Stadium is the home of AC Milan and Inter Milan. Even if you are not a fan, a guided tour of the stadium and museum is a must-see.
